Neurology: A one day refresher course for small animal clinicians

Nothing fills vets with more dread than the prospect of a neurology case. However, “common things occur commonly” and the intention of this day is to share experience gained from more than quarter of a century of diagnosing and treating neuro cases in primary care and referral practice. The aim of this one-day course is to review the diagnosis and management of the more common neurological cases as they present in small animal general practice giving practical tips and evidence based advice to take home and use for the benefit of your own patients and clients.

The speaker is Malcolm Ness BVet Med, CertSAO, Dip ECVS, FRCVS. Well known as a Specialist surgeon, Malcolm has had a long-term interest and qualifications in clinical neurology – he has a Diploma of Fellowship in Small Animal Spinal Disease and has published and lectured internationally. With extensive experience of common small animal neurological disease, both as clinical director of a busy primary care practice and as a referral clinician, Malcolm has a wealth of hands-on experience to share.

The course will be in two parts: first a look at basic diagnostic techniques including the neurological examination and a review of diagnostic imaging including the controversies and confusion around CT and MRI. The remainder of the course will look at specific presentations in a case-based way including

Seizures; Paralysis; Vestibular Syndrome. In-depth case-oriented discussion will explore controversies and describe a practical approach to the management of these sometimes rather challenging cases.
